Holistic dentistry considers both the mouth and teeth, reflecting on the totality of the patient. With this philosophy, you’re perfecting your oral cavity, as well as the rest of your body, such as your habits, and your emotions! It’s often confused with alternative medicine, but it’s much more interesting.

In fact, many diseases and health disorders show symptoms in the oral cavity, and vice versa. This is where the experience and knowledge of a holistic dentist is required, being able to run necessary tests in order to diagnose, and treat any health problems.

The relationship between oral and general health

The Journal Dentistry Today assures that there is a relationship between diseases and oral health, such as the following:

  • Diabetes: People who suffer from this disease become less resistant to infections, causing them to have gum problems.
  • Kidney diseases: When the kidney fails, some substances are released, causing bad breath, or a dry and unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Heart diseases: Studies show that a periodontal problem increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart problems, or even a stroke.
  • Anxiety: It affects the immune system, reducing the defenses against infections. It is also related to bruxism, as stress causes that habit of clenching or grinding the teeth unconsciously.

Other interpretations of holistic dentistry

Some holistic dentists go a little further, and relate each type of tooth with a disorder or feeling. For example, a large incisor would indicate internal fears and nightmares, irregular canines would express desire for something, or a cavity in the lower premolars or upper molars could be a concern, need to have fun, or disappointment. For now, you have to give it the benefit of the doubt, since the "emotional meaning" of teeth has not been proven for sure.

There are other holistic dentists who suggest to reduce the use of metals to repair teeth, such as caries, crowns or covers. Instead, they recommend fiberglass or carbon.

In conclusion, holistic dentistry is an interesting concept that all dental clinics should know of, mostly because many patients are interested in it, and it can be very useful. However, be careful with the information you read or hear about this treatment. Remember to always consult a professional, and get on board with holistic dentistry!
